A Legacy of Compassion and Care
Our collaboration with Driscoll Children’s Hospital is inspired by a legacy of compassion that began over 70 years ago with a generous gift from Clara Driscoll. Her visionary spirit and deep concern for the welfare of children laid the foundation for what would become a cornerstone of pediatric care in South Texas.
In her will, Clara Driscoll requested the establishment of a fund dedicated to maintaining a charitable hospital for indigent children. This initiative led to the creation of the Robert Driscoll and Julia Driscoll and Robert Driscoll Jr. Foundation, which has since overseen the assets and financial operations of the hospital. With the assistance of Dr. McIver Furman, the hospital opened its doors on Alameda Street in Corpus Christi, Texas, in 1953.
Expanding Access to Pediatric Care
Originally a 25-bed facility, Driscoll Children’s Hospital has grown into a leading institution with over 32 medical and 13 surgical specialties. This growth has allowed the hospital to expand its services, becoming the first in South Texas to offer emergency services exclusively for children and performing the region’s first organ transplant. Today, Driscoll Children’s Hospital provides emergency care to approximately 40,000 children each year.
In 1970, the hospital transitioned from a “charity only” institution to a “not-for-profit” status, broadening its mission to serve all children, regardless of financial background. This change has been pivotal in ensuring that no child in South Texas and beyond is denied the care they need.
